Teen jailed for attempting to rape 63-year-old granny

HARARE - A 19-year-old Harare man was jailed 20 months after he robbed a 63-year-old granny following a failed rape attempt.

Leonard Jambaya, 19, was convicted of robbery charges when he appeared before Harare regional magistrate Aidonia Masawi last week.

Masawi sentenced Jambaya to 40 months imprisonment before suspending 20 months on condition of good behaviour.

Prosecutor Liberty Gono proved that on May 28 the 63-year-old, who is a vendor, had just finished selling her wares when she decided to relieve herself first before going home.

But before she could relieve herself in the bush near Mukuvisi River, Jambaya pounced, grabbed her, and threatened to stab her unless she obeyed his orders.

He ordered the old woman to strip naked and threatened to kill her if she resisted.

She complied and removed all her clothes fearing for her life.

She was ordered to lie on her back before Jambaya removed his trousers and tried to rape her, but he failed to penetrate her.

The court heard that he then asked the woman why her privates were too small and then ordered her to open her legs wider so that he could examine her.

After the failed rape attempt, Jambaya took the woman’s $30 while pressing her neck on the ground.

He ordered her to remain lying down so she would not see the direction he took.

The complainant later dressed herself before going to town where she confided in her son about the incident.

She reported the matter at ZRP Matapi Police Station the following day.

On June 26, she positively identified Jambaya and informed Matapi police and he was arrested. Source: Dailynews
