SEVEN people died and five others were seriously injured yesterday morning in a head-on collision which occurred about 20km from Kwekwe along the Kwekwe-Gweru highway.

Six people died on the spot and another one died on admission to Kwekwe General Hospital. A Honda Fit which was travelling towards Gweru collided head on with a Mazda B2200 that was transporting security guards in the Kwekwe direction.

Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident. He said the Honda Fit had two people while the truck had eleven occupants. Both drivers were killed in the accident.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm the death of seven people in a road traffic accident which occurred along the Kwekwe – Gweru Road near Kwekwe River on 21st July 2015 at 0430 hours,” said Chief Supt Nyathi.

“Circumstances are that a Honda Fit which was proceeding towards Gweru collided head on with a Mazda B2200 pickup truck which was going in the opposite direction. The Honda Fit had two occupants while the truck had eleven.”

Chief Supt Nyathi said of the five who were seriously injured, two were transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital while the other three are admitted to Kwekwe General Hospital.

He said names of the dead were being withheld until their next of kin have been contacted. “Police are urging motorists to avoid speeding and to negotiate road curves with caution,” said Chief Supt Nyathi.

A witnesses told The Chronicle yesterday that the Honda Fit, which was allegedly speeding, failed to negotiate a curve and encroached onto the right lane resulting in the head on collision.

“On impact, the Honda Fit veered off the road, overturned and rolled several times before landing on its wheels and the truck also veered off the road,” said the witness.

The bodies were all taken to Kwekwe General Hospital mortuary. The Chronicle
