Davido impresses on Zimbabwe debut

HARARE – Nigerian international star Davido thrilled a surprisingly big crowd that thronged Harare’s Belgravia Sports Club on Saturday night for his maiden concert in Zimbabwe.

With the Zimbabwean capital also hosting a Zimdancehall Cup Clash at City Sports Centre, a Summer Festival gig at Waterwhirld as well as a high-profile local gig featuring Jah Prayzah at Longcheng on the same night, there were fears that the highly rated Nigerian star’s gig would fail to attract big numbers.

But hundreds of music fans, predominantly ladies, packed Belgravia Sports Club where the Skelewu hit maker shared the stage with urban groove artistes who included Roki, Ex-Q and Trevor Dongo.

Davido, who had told journalists earlier at a press conference held at Meikles Hotel that he had been impressed by Killer T’s music, impressed the packed crowd by performing his well-known hits including Skelewu, My Number One, Dami Duro, Aye and Tchelete, a collaboration with South African house music group Mafikizolo.

The Nigerian music star’s lady fans never stopped screaming in delight as the young international musician belted out hit after hit in his slot that lasted an hour.

With Davido reportedly charging $100 000 for him to perform with a band and $60 000 for a presentation without his backing band, it was not surprising that Chipaz Promotions — the organisers of the concert — opted to bring him to Harare with just a DJ.

To his credit, the absence of a backing band did not dampen the quality of his performance.

Chipaz Promotions director Partson Chimbodza told the Daily News that he did not pay the required $60 000 to bring him to Harare.

“I will not reveal the exact amount we paid Davido because it is private and confidential. We negotiated a better deal with the artiste because he is currently on an African tour and because of that we are paying far less. Charges fluctuate depending on the situation and context,” said Chimbodza. Daily News
