Of course impressive ratings also contributed to the decision no doubt.
On Friday, Fox announced what many had assumed was coming, an order for more episodes of the hit drama about the hip hop music industry, according to Deadline.
While the size of the order has yet to be confirmed, it's a definite win for a show which has astonished critics, viewers and industry insiders with its quality and success. In fact, also according to Deadline, the show is the most tweeted about program on broadcast television.
It also holds the coveted title of most watched show on broadcast television among adults 18-49, which is the most desirable age group for advertisers.
Season one of the show consisted of just 12 episodes, while season two was 18 episodes in length, both short of the network standard of 22. At last week's Golden Globes, Empire was the only network drama nominated in the category of best series.
Taraji P. Henson was elated on Sunday, as she took to the stage to accept her first Golden Globe for portraying Empire fan-favorite Cookie Lyon.
The 45-year-old's win for best performance by an actress in a drama series simply added to the show's already impressive pedigree. Dailymail
