POLICE are harassing couples and lovers who choose to relax in the lush green Harare Gardens during weekends, accusing leisure seekers of what they call “indecent sitting”.

Those who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com said two ZRP officers patrolling in the Harare Gardens park during weekends accuse them of inappropriate sitting and demand that they pay a “fine” or “risk imprisonment.”

A man who preferred to be called Tawanda said him and his girlfriend were released after paying a $4 fine which they negotiated with the police officers who claimed the official penalty was either $100 or an unspecified prison term.

“They (police officers) came when my girlfriend was sleeping on my lap and they shouted, accusing us of being intimate saying this was inappropriate and against the law.

“vashevedzera kuti imimi siyai zvamuri kuita imhosva iyoyo magariro amakaita (they shouted saying we should stop whatever we were doing as this was against the law,” said an irate Tawanda.

Another couple said they were also forced to pay a ‘fine’ for a similar “offence”.

“We no longer have bus fare to go to Highfied and my girlfriend who lives in Greendale suburb as we both live separately,” said Timothy.

When NewZimbabwe.com followed the two police officers and asked them which Act prohibits couples from sitting close to each other in the parks, the cops threatened the news crew with unspecified action. They warned the journalists against obstructing the course of justice.
