Winky D to launch album at Morgan Heritage gig

HARARE – Zimdancehall star Winky D will release a 12-track new album titled Gafa Futi tomorrow.

The imminent album, which was produced by Oskid, is a sequel to the highly successful Gafa Life that spawned hits such as Disappear, which topped the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Radio 1Extra Destination Africa Top 5.

Winky D’s manager, Jonathan Banda, told the Daily News yesterday that the Ninja President would take advantage of the forthcoming Morgan Heritage concert which will take place at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on Saturday to unveil songs off Gafa Futi.

“We will effectively launch the album at the Morgan Heritage concert at the weekend. Fans who will attend will have the opportunity to feel the songs live for the first time. For that reason, the concert is not one to miss,” he said.

Banda added that Gafa Futi includes Winky D’s duet with superstar Oliver Mtukudzi titled Panorwadza Moyo, Bhebhi raMwari and Twenty-five.

Banda is confident that the imminent album will be bigger than Gafa Life which not only topped the BBC Radio 1Extra Destination Africa Top 5 but also saw several local artistes falling over each other to do cover versions of the hit.

Guitarist, singer and songwriter Tariro neGitare added a jazzy feel to the song while a duo going by name Us Two made up of Chido Chigwedere and Mutsa Chiromo-teamed up with one Zviko to create their own cover version of the self-styled Zimdancehall president’s hit song.

Social media was awash with various other versions of the song with one of the most interesting being a cover of Disappear in a Roman Catholic style by an unidentified group. The cover was so well done that one could easily mistake it for a church hymn. Disappear also had several apostolic style versions.

Early this year, Banda described Disappear as the “perfect hit.”

“You can’t stop art. The artistes who are doing their own versions of the song Disappear are endorsing the greatness of the song. It happens worldwide whenever a song with cross-cutting appeal is released.

“The fact that covers are being dropped daily, including Catholic and Apostolic versions, goes on to show that the artiste has won the hearts of many a listener,”  Banda told the Daily News then.

Other hits on Gafa Life were Mirror, Woshora, Idya Mari, Ngoma Futi, Survivor featuring Shinsoman, Copyrights, Holiday featuring Guspy Warrior and Not Nice.
