Zimbabwean born Police officer in The UK dies mysteriously at his desk

UK: Thames Valley Police has paid tribute to Zimbabwe-born Det Con Joe Mabuto, a serving police officer, who died at Milton Keynes police station last Tuesday (September 27).

Married with two young children, DC Mabuto, 42, joined Thames Valley Police in 2004 and was stationed at Milton Keynes Police Station on the Patrol Team 5.

He immediately made an impact on his team and within the community that he worked, by simply being present – his considered and thoughtful approach instantly calming volatile situations and providing an ear and a hand to those that needed his support.

Mabuto moved to the North Sector Neighbourhood Policing Team in 2007, initially as a Neighbourhood Officer, and in 2008 became a supervisor for a team of PCSOs.

Together, they worked with community and partner agencies to improve the quality of living in the area, by understanding residents’ needs, supporting problem-solving approaches to repeated crime themes and safeguarding those with the greatest need.

“He was a strong believer in being visible in the neighbourhood and much preferred to be on foot patrol, so he could speak to people within his community,” said PS Rena Galardziak.

“During a time of tension, Joe’s knowledge and understanding of a situation was key in resolving and returning peace to the area; his outstanding work was commended by the area commander and I know Joe was extremely proud of this work and his recognition.”

Det Con Mabuto passed his National Investigators Exam in March 2015 and applied at the first opportunity for a detective’s post. Five months later, he passed his selection interview with flying colours, scoring an overall A grade with his comprehensive and considered approach.

He was posted to the Force CID team at Milton Keynes in October last year, where he trained and learned the craft of investigating serious and complex crime.

Det Con Greg Hughes said: “Joe was so determined to learn and it was always a pleasure to answer any question he had and give him pointers.

“He quickly became a driven investigator, striving to get results. He loved what he did and was proud to be doing his job.”

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Joe’s wife, children, mother and siblings, as we share the loss of this iconic and gentle man.

“This tribute is made with the blessing of Joe’s family, who are still in shock and deeply saddened by his loss. He is survived by his wife and two young children, who seek comfort from their extended family members in the UK and Zimbabwe.

“Joe’s family are extremely proud of his successes and role within the police service, a job that brought great honour to their family and fulfilment in his life.”
