“Things are tough my brother, I can’t even take care of my own family right now. If it wasn’t for my son Gary, I really don’t know what would have happened to them,” said Willom Tight in a rare disclosure on the rocky shores the singer has hit.
Willom Tight (44) has three children; Gary (21), Sasha (15) and Mia (5). Gary has followed in his father’s footsteps and is also a musician. Willom said were it not for few and far between corporate gigs and wedding performances, he would not be able to give his family a morsel.
“The father and son combination that my son and I created recently has been helping, but the truth is that his gigs and a job at a school where he teaches music have been keeping us afloat. I just thank God for giving me such a son who has not strayed and gone into drugs or abandoned his family,” said Willom Tight.
The “Nyoka iNyoka” singer who at his peak shared the stage with the likes of Dr Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo, Dr Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi and South African musical royalty Salaelo Selota, said he was blessed to have such a family.
“My youngest kid is in crèche, the other one is in high school while Gary is at the College of Music. I should be taking care of them, it is my responsibility but now Gary is taking care of the family, helping with his sisters’ school fees while paying his own as well.
“I just hope that when this album (“Manifesto”) comes out, it will signal a change of fortunes for me so that I can properly take care of my kids, even spoil them. They deserve it,” said Willom.
The Tafara-based artiste believes he should wait patiently for the season of harvesting ahead.
“I have to be professional. I have a 10-year contract with Shamiso Music and Entertainment and I have to respect that. God does things in his own time. He cannot be rushed,” said Willom.
Willom burst onto the entertainment scene in the 1990s with the group Mateo and Friends and saw his career skyrocket between 2003 and 2006.
His collaboration with Dino Mudondo was a firm favourite and his craft saw him perform in Congo-Brazzaville, the DRC, South Africa, Zambia, Namibia and Tanzania among others.
His son, Gary, is putting final touches to a 10-track album that features Jah Prayzah. The Sunday Mail
