ROONEY EQUALS CHARLTON'S ENGLAND RECORD

Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney equalled Sir Bobby Charlton's scoring record with his 49th international goal as England thrashed San Marino 6-0 in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Saturday.

The Manchester United striker opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 13th minute as Roy Hodgson’s side booked their place at next summer’s finals in France with three games to spare.

Rooney was taken off just before the hour mark but will have the chance to surpass Charlton’s tally at Wembley on Tuesday, when England face Switzerland. Coincidentally, both Reds legends reached the 49-goal mark in 106 matches.

"It’s a proud moment for me to equal Sir Bobby’s record," Rooney told ITV after the game. "My aim now is to push on, try to help the team get the victory on Tuesday night and try to break that record and become the out-and-out record-holder.

"It would have been good if it had happened tonight but to break the record at Wembley, with its tradition, would be great. But again, it's important that we win the game."
