A contingent of Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) security personnel has left for the Equatorial Guinea for a period of six months to train the country’s military officers.
The training arrangement will be on logistics and operational matters.
ZDF Commander, General Constantine Chiwenga, who presided at the send-off ceremony at One Commando in Harare, said the deployment follows an urgent request by President Obiang Nguema Mbassogo.
“The Equatorial Guinea had realised some training deficiencies on their defence forces, hence the request. In line with the ethics of our defence, I want you to remain professional and undertake this mission and any other additional tasks given to you,” he told the contingent.
General Chiwenga urged the security forces to remain professional and undertake the mission with discipline as they execute the bilateral training arrangement.
The contingent is composed of members of the Zimbabwe National Army and Air Force of Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe and Equatorial Guinea share close relations dating back to 2004 when Harare intercepted a group of mercenaries on a mission to topple the Malabo government.
In January this year, Zimbabwe sent security personnel to help Equatorial Guinea’s security during the African Nations Cup football tournament. ZBC News
