CONTEMPORARY musician Jah Prayzah has taken a leaf from South Africa’s Cassper Nyovest as he plans to test his popularity by filling up the popular Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on New Year’s Eve.
October 31, 2015 is a date that the music industry will never forget as Cassper Nyovest made history by becoming the first South African artiste to sell-out a 20,000 capacity Dome in Johannesburg.
In the same vein, the Eriza hit-maker and his 3rd Generation band are hoping to attract at least 5,000 people at a venue well known for hosting sold out shows.
The HICC is not a new territory for Jah Prayzah who performs there almost every month. Compared to Cassper, Jah Prayzah’s target is child’s play as he commands such a following in smaller cities and has actually been close to filling up this venue before during his album launches.
His latest album, Jerusarema as well as last year’s Kumbumura Mhute were both launched at the HICC and attracted close to 5,000 people, showing Jah Prayzah’s capacity. Keen Mushapaidze, Jah Prayzah’s manager said they were inspired by Cassper Nyovest’s achievements.
“We’ve been planning to hold a big show for our fans for a long time.vWhen Cassper Nyovest filled up the Dome in South Africa, it pushed us to have a similar gig. This is why we’ve come up with the #FillUpTheHICC,” said Mushapaidze.
Asked why they had not chosen bigger venues such as Glamis Stadium or the National Sports Stadium, which need at least 40,000 people, Mushapaidze said most venues they would have wanted had already been booked.
“We’d have loved to go to a bigger venue but most of them were fully booked. We didn’t want an outdoor event as we feared the rain would disturb proceedings,” Mushapaidze said. He said while Jah Prayzah has staged several shows at the HICC, the December 31 show would be unique as he will be the main act.
“We’re hoping to fill up the HICC without an international act or album launch.” Like Cassper, Jah Prayzah’s advance tickets will cost $10 and are set to go on sale on December 20. “There’re 5,000 advance tickets that will be sold at Coloursel outlets nationwide. If the tickets get sold out before the show, that’ll be a bonus for us.” The muso will also call on services of fellow artistes to share the stage with him.
“There’ll be numerous supporting acts during the show whom we’re still negotiating with,” Mushapaidze said.
In preparation for #FillUpTheHICC, fans in Binga and Hwange will have a festive season treat a few days for Christmas.
On December 23, Jah Prayzah and Winky D will perform at the Binga Freedom Square. On Christmas Eve, the pair will be joined by Tryson Chimbetu for a show at the Hwange Colliery Stadium.
But before heading north, Jah Prayzah returns to the Amphitheatre in Bulawayo by public demand for a show where he will be supported by afro fusion artiste Mzoe Z and hip hop artistes Cal_Vin and Guluva
