Reeva Steenkamp can now rest in peace after justice was carried out today when her killer Oscar Pistorius was convicted of her murder, her family has said.
As Miss Steenkamp's mother June was pictured being comforted at the sensational court hearing, her father Barry told media his daughter will now be able to 'rest well' knowing 'justice was done'.
Pistorius was today convicted of murdering his former girlfriend on Valentine's Day 2013 and faces being sent back to jail until he is well into his forties.
The sprinter was not in the Supreme Court of Appeal this morning to hear the decision of a five-strong panel of judges to overturn his manslaughter charge and impose the murder conviction.
However, he is said to be 'devastated' at the ruling - which comes a month after he was released on house arrest and may see him serve another 15 years in prison. Her father made a brief statement this morning.
He said: 'I am sure that Reeva is up there watching it and now she’s saying "justice was done." I am sure she’ll be able to rest well now.'
Before breaking down in tears, he told broadcaster ANN7: 'It's a big relief. I feel it's a fair decision that the judge gave.'
Pistorius' agent Peet van Zyl said a murder conviction was ‘devastating’ for his former client, who stood to make a fortune following his historic appearance at the London Olympics.
He added: 'I am hoping to see Oscar in the next few days. I hope I can have some time with him and a quiet chat.'
Pistorius, 29, will now return to court in the New Year to face a new, much harsher sentence, for shooting Reeva Steenkamp through a toilet door in his home. Dailymail
