Boxing fans expressed fears for Frank Bruno's health today after the 54-year-old boxer suggested he could return to the ring during a rambling television interview.

The sporting legend, who has battled mental illness for many years, insisted that he had 'no choice' but to take up boxing again despite his age, saying that he still works out every day and remains at peak physical fitness.

But fans said that Bruno seemed 'manic' during his interview on ITV's This Morning, and experts warned that he should 'absolutely not' consider returning to boxing.

The British boxing hero has endured a heavily-publicised battle with bipolar disorder but Sportsmail understands he discussed the possibility of a comeback among friends following Tyson Fury’s world-title win in November and made the surprise revelation that he wants to step in the ring again on Monday.

He told This Morning: ‘I've been in the gym all the time, that's why I want to come back into boxing. I'm going back into boxing as well.’ Presenter Phillip Schofield asked if it was a good idea and Bruno responded: ‘I haven't got a choice. I train everyday.’

He added: 'I can't sit down and let these so-called promoters say Anthony Joshua can knock me out in two rounds when I'm not even dead.'  Dailymail
