Boxing sensation Charles Manyuchi today returned home to a hero's welcome following a unanimous win in the World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight silver title over Russian Dmitry Mikhaylenko on Friday.
Local boxing fans broke into dance and song at the Harare International Airport where their hero Manyuchi returned home from a successful tour of Russia.
Speaking shortly after his arrival, Manyuchi thanked his sponsors as well as the Ministry of Sport and Recreation who played a major role in enabling the boxer to reunite with his promoters.
On how he was able to overcome a boxer that had gone for 21 bouts without a defeat, Manyuchi attributed his Russian success to a well-employed strategy which ensured he overcame Mikhaylenko.
Manyuchi’s victory was a huge step as the Zimbabwean boxer is now eligible to realise his dream of a shot at the gold WBC welterweight title which was left vacant by Floyd “Moneymaker” Mayweather.
Meanwhile, as a way of recognising Manyuchi's feats, the Ministry of Sport and Recreation is this evening hosting a dinner for the victorious boxer.
