Veteran radio and television comedian, poet, musician and short story teller Dudzai Mtomba aka Baba Shupi has quit showbiz after “giving his life to Jesus Christ”.

Mtomba joined showbiz as a comedian in 1992 and rose to stardom through his radio skits such as Nhau naBaba Shupi among others.

Radio skits made him a darling of many, therefore attracting corporate endorsements among other lucrative deals till he met Jesus Christ through Seventh-day Adventist Church.

“As Seventh-day Adventist members, we are distinguished by our observance of Saturday, the seventh day of the week in Christian calendars.

“It was hard for me to observe the day if I continued with showbiz considering that Saturdays are the busiest days in the arts sector.

“So I weighed which was better, to repent or to chase material things,” Mtomba who has an album Sungai Mbabvu under his belt said.

Mtomba who holds a diploma in Mass Communication and Journalism and in Salesmanship told the Daily News that he is now focusing on his Christian life and writing books including the recently-published Christian Sayings and Riddles.

“Since I have surrendered my life to God, I am now spreading the goodness of Him to other people through writing Christian books.

“The book Christian Sayings and Riddles consists of crossword puzzles and well-known short phrases like those in the book of Proverbs. “I also use some well-known jokes in an effort to teach the word of God in a simple way,” he said.

Mtomba’s book targets individual readers as well as organisations including schools and churches.

“Sunday school and pathfinder teachers may also browse through to get one or two puzzles for their classes. The book is a must read for all church goers,” he said.

Mtomba is not the first artist to quit the stage after finding Jesus as yesteryear singer Matthew Kaunda, popularly known as Mateo, famed for the hit songs Pamuhacha and Asambe Africa also relinquished his flourishing career after receiving Jesus through Jehovah’s Witness Church.
