Sex with no coitus - It's easy to be intimate without penetration

There are many alternatives nowadays to give you something close to the original. If you are vegetarian and craving a hamburger, there's the soya version. If you want wine but you are a teetotaller, there's the non-alcoholic alternative.

But, did you know that there is also an alternative to penetrative sex? Yes, this means you can have sex and actually experience an orgasm without penetration.

This kind is called outercourse, an alternative to intercourse, which means there is no direct contact between the partners engaging in the sexual act.

To find out more about this unique concept, we spoke to sexologist Dr Elna McIntosh about the different types of sex that involve no penetration at all. Sex without coitus, meaning without the sexual organs coming together.

"Outercourse is lovemaking without penetration. It allows a couple to be sexual, more intimate, and even orgasmic with one another without having sexual intercourse.

"With outercourse, no semen, vaginal fluids, or blood is shared between partners.

"As a result, outercourse protects against pregnancy and some sexually transmitted infections (STIs)," McIntosh says.

But why would a couple engage in outercourse? What are some of the benefits?

"Outercourse is beneficial to some people in many ways. It can be for those people who choose to abstain from sex or are not ready for intercourse yet.

"It can also help if one partner doesn't feel like having intercourse or not in the mood, or if a partner is sore or has an infection.

"It is great if people don't have condoms or any other birth control, as opposed to risking it. It can be a great alternative if the woman is on her period, or perhaps a couple just want to experience something different for a change."

McIntosh gives four different examples of outercourse.

THIGH SEX

"Thigh sex or ukusoma in Zulu is a type of non-penetrative sex, which involves a male placing his penis between his partner's thighs (often with lubrication), and thrusting to create friction.

"It can be a very erotic and intimate experience, but also selfless because it involves ensuring that your partner reaches orgasm, if you are not in the mood yourself, or perhaps preserving your virginity."

McIntosh says although people think thigh sex as non-beneficial and unpleasurable to the woman, the opposite is actually true.

"Most women do actually reach orgasm with thigh sex.

Because of the intimacy and closeness of a couple during this outercourse, the woman can actually climax. Not from penetration, but (from) the friction and intimacy of the act.

"Also, thigh sex can be very empowering to the woman. You are in charge, and determine what will or will not happen to your body. So it is not degrading at all."

FROTTAGE

"This is also known as dry humping, or sex with clothes on," McIntosh says.

"It is all about the pelvic movements. The more you rub against each other, the more pleasure both partners feel. Even though pelvic movements are crucial, tackle dry humping just like penetrative sex, meaning use your hands, touch, rub, bite, nibble.

"You do not want to dry hump with jeans on. Shorts allow you to feel more skin, making the experience more sensual."

SEX WITH YOUR EYES

Ever heard the phrase undressing someone with your eyes?

This is exactly what this type of sex involves.

"The trick is visualising the act while staring at your partner in a sexy way. He must also do the same. It can be mindblowingly erotic, and yes, can lead to orgasm.

"Another trick is doing the sexyeye stare while in a room full of people. Only you and your partner will be [in] on it, while everyone else is oblivious to your sexy thoughts and stares."

SENSUAL MASSAGING

"This type of sex can be extremely pleasurable," says McIntosh. "This is the reason why some people get erotic massages . It involves sensually massaging your partner.

"Taking your time, and rubbing on each other's bodies head to toe, with warmed, scented oils and with gentle, evocative music [playing] in the background."

She says the use of some erotic oils can boost one's libido and sexual excitement, leading to a very erotic massage that can lead to a great orgasm.
