Jah Prayzah defies January disease

HARARE – Music star Jah Prayzah demonstrated at Extra Mile Leisure on Sunday that the so-called January disease is for lesser mortals.

The high-riding Jerusarema singer attracted hundreds of music fans to the family show held at the entertainment venue located near Boka Tobacco Auction Floors.

Most artistes, including sungura icon Alick Macheso, have taken a month-long break from the stage because music fans traditionally shun concerts in January but not Jah Prayzah, who is profiting from his red-hot latest album Jerusarema.

The Uzumba-born artiste, who has become associated with military fatigues, was clad in a grey pair of trousers, a white long-sleeved shirt and a matching striped tie. The new Third Generation gear can easily pass for a school uniform.

The “school uniform,” that was used on the video of the song Eriza, seems to have become an instant favourite with Jah Prayzah’s fans who came in droves donning the new gear.

As has become the norm, the dreadlocked singer and his Third Generation band delivered a spirited performance full of energy and class.

The award-winning 29-year-old musician took advantage of the family show to sample some of his yet-to-be-released songs much to the delight of his passionate fans.

Though most of the new songs were well-received, it was the track Hello that sent the crowd into pure delirium. Jah Prayzah had to play the new song at least three times due to fan pressure.

Since Jah Prayzah launched Jerusarema in March last year, at an event officiated by Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, people have been packing his concerts in Harare and beyond.

The energetic performer conceded in an interview with the Daily News that Jerusarema is his most popular album to date.

“I have learnt that all songs on the album Jerusarema are hit songs. At our concerts, fans sing along to all the tracks from the album.

“Jerusarema is one album that has made people believe in my music more than before even though I doubted the song Eriza before I released the album.

“In fact, I was not willing to include it on the album but thanks to my management, I was persuaded to include it.

“The only song I was sure with is Jerusarema the title track,” he said.

The success of Jerusarema has enabled Jah Prayzah to open two recording studios and to acquire top-of-the-range cars. He also recently formed an event-management company called JP Events. Daily News
