MUTARE: A self-proclaimed prophet was Monday sentenced to two months in prison after he deceived a follower by claiming that her mobile phone had to be destroyed because it was demon-possessed only convert the gadget to personal use.
Tichaona Zimondi, 27, of Gimbok pleaded guilty to theft when he appeared before magistrate Poterai Gwezhira.
The magistrate gave Zimhondi the option of paying a $100 fine to avoid a spell in jail.
Court heard that the theft occurred recently after Agnes Finhai, 29, went to Zimhondi`s place for prayers in the morning.
Zimhondi then “prophesied” that Finhai was about to be tempted by the devil through her Samsung Galaxy Star mobile phone.
He said Finhai was going to receive a call from someone and she was going to die after receiving the call.
Prosecutors said Zimondi claimed that the phone was possessed with demons and there was need to destroy it in a calabash.
Finhai then surrendered the phone but Zimondi did not destroy the gadget, converting it instead to personal use.
Later, Finhai made some consultations with locals who advised her that she had been duped. She then went to demand her mobile phone back from the prophet but was told the gadget had already been burnt.
Court heard that Finhai pestered Zimhondi about her phone until he admitted that he had not burnt it but had converted it to personal use.
He promised to replace the phone in three days but never did. Finhai then reported the matter to police, leading to Zimhondi’s arrest.
