THE 2016 Christmas holiday traffic death toll has risen to 21 after five more people were killed in two separate accidents on Boxing Day, police said yesterday.
National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said all the fatal accidents recorded on Monday happened between 8pm and midnight.
“No major fatal road accidents were recorded on the country’s highways. The fatal traffic accidents involved four pedestrians who were knocked down while crossing the road and one in which a passenger perished,” Nyathi said.
Thirteen people were injured in the accidents compared to 42 injured during the same period last year. Sixteen people died in separate accidents on Christmas Day.
Police said most of the accidents were as a result of speeding.
“As the holiday is still on-going motorists are urged to avoid speeding and be on the look-out for pedestrians as they travel either on highways or feeder roads,” Nyathi said.
The police have increased their presence on the roads and impounded 101 defective cars on Boxing Day, a significant increase from 65 that were impounded on the same day last year.
Nyathi said 6 370 people were arrested for various offences on Boxing Day compared to last year’s 5 838 arrests.
