Mother and son caught in the act at a shopping centre

A CHINHOYI woman and her son had a se_xual relationship with her son and even had a tryst at a local shopping centre, a city court heard this week.

Widow Joyce Nhevera of Madzudzo Village under Chief Magonde and son Eddington Tutuma, 26, were sentenced to 18 months in prison for incest by Chinhoyi magistrate Brenda Dhliwayo.

The court suspended six months of the sentence on conditions, and commuted the rest to community service.

According to a State-owned daily, the pair started having the relationship between November 2 and 17 this year. They were arrested after being “found in a compromising position” at Kenzamba Shopping Centre.

Passing sentence, magistrate Dhliwayo said the “relationship is a taboo in our culture and a strong message has to be sent out there”.

However, the court said a custodial sentence would be “too harsh” and ordered the pair to perform community service at local schools.

They had pleaded guilty to having sexual intercourse within a prohibited degree of relationship in contravention of Section 75 (2) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

Court heard that the affair started after Tutuma, who was staying in Mhangura, moved to live with his mother in Kenzamba.

Prosecutors said the two had sexual encounters on numerous occasions in Nhevera’s kitchen hut and Tutuma’s bedroom.
