Rio Ferdinand has slashed the sale price of his seven-bed Cheshire mansion by £1.5million barely a month after the death of his wife because it holds 'painful memories'.

The former England and Manchester United captain shared the home with his late wife Rebecca and their three children and put it on the market last July for £4.5million.

But the house, in the exclusive village of Alderley Edge, is now up for sale for £3million.

According to The Sun, Ferdinand, who retired from football at the end of this season, is desperate to sell the mansion because it holds painful memories of happier times with Rebecca.

A source said: 'Rio doesn't want to keep the house because it is just too upsetting. 'He has now decided to slash the asking price to get it off his hands and try to move on with his life his children.'
