Cellular network MTN is at pains to quell suggestions that they are now manufacturing condoms. This comes as images of "MTN-manufactured" condoms surfaced on social networks this week, giving the impression that the company was taking on popular lifestyle brands that manufacture the rubber.
MTN's senior public relations and internal communications manager Bridget Bhengu said the company was distancing itself from the images.
"Our attention has been drawn to a photograph of an MTN-branded contraceptive currently making the rounds on various social media platforms.
MTN does not manufacture condoms and we disassociate ourselves from any communication or pictures posted on social media that suggests otherwise," Bhengu said.
She said this was not the first time the network provider has had to defend itself from these allegations which first surfaced six months ago.
Ghana and Nigeria also experienced the problem when the images became widespread in West Africa. The company's Ghana office went as far as releasing a statement dissociating itself from the image and also launching an investigation into the matter.
Bhengu could not indicate whether the images were photo-shopped or whether they were actual condoms. Timesworld
