ZANU PF apologist Fidelis Fengu, who was being charged of swindling a Chinese national in a botched residence permit deal, was yesterday slapped with an effective four months’ jail term after being convicted of extortion.

Initially, Harare magistrate Elijah Makomo had sentenced Fengu to a total of 12 months’ imprisonment, but eight months of the total sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour and restitution in the sum of $2 000.

Prosecutor Francisca Mukumbiri presented that in July this year, Fengu and one Francis Hungwe assisted a Chinese national, Shu Xiaofeng, to acquire a fake residence permit through the Zimbabwe Immigration Department after being paid $2 000.

The court heard, Fengu and Hungwe misrepresented to Xiaofeng that the document which they supplied to him had originated from the immigration department.

In passing sentence, Makomo said cases of misrepresentation were on the increase and many people were being prejudiced. Newsday
