WOMEN Affairs minister Nyasha Chikwinya could be in trouble with the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) if it turns out she has no clearance to distribute the sex-enhancing pills she dished out in Gokwe-Nembudziya on Saturday.
MCAZ spokesperson Richard Rukwata said there were certain regulations which should be followed before distributing such drugs.
Rukwata refused to be drawn into the particular scenario of Chikwinya.
“I cannot comment specifically on the minister,” he said. “The legal position doesn’t allow anyone to distribute those tablets outside of the framework. It doesn’t matter who is involved.”
MCAZ has banned over-the-counter selling of sex-enhancing drugs on the basis of their side effects.
Their distribution should now be accompanied by a medical doctor’s prescription. But while addressing the gathering in Gokwe-Nembudziya where sex-enhancing tablets were later distributed, Chikwinya said she was an award-winning distributor of Chinese products.
Responding to the NewsDay story, readers said it was irresponsible to distribute such drugs as consumers needed screening first.
“Highly irresponsible behaviour from these Zanoid legislators,” wrote one reader.
“Prescription drugs are not distributed like confetti at a wedding. Most of these sex enhancement drugs can only be administered by health workers only to people with a normal blood pressure level because the pills function by inducing blood flow to the male genital organ and can induce a hyper-active heartbeat in someone prone to BP.”
Chikwinya said she would be going to Gokwe-Nembudziya again next month with a Chinese delegation on a cancer awareness campaign. Newsday
