A Harare man has been arrested after he tried to bribe a cop with $800.

Friday Mandula wanted the cop to release his colleagues who were in police custody. His colleagues had been arrested after they were found in possession of 79 bags of suspected stolen maize seed weighing 50kg each.

He was charged with bribery and was remanded to today on $50 bail. As part of his bail conditions, he was asked not to interfere with witnesses and to reside at the address he gave to the court.

Prosecutor Mrs Hilda Huni-Munaku alleged that on November 6, Clara Machini, Phineas Kundishora and Joram Shokoto were arrested after they were found in possession of 79 bags of Kein maize seed.
The court heard that the maize seed was reasonably suspected to be stolen property.

It is alleged that a day after the arrest of his friends, Mandula went to Machipisa Police Station where they were being held and gave Constable Gomba $800.

It is the State’s case that Cst Gomba inquired from Mandula what the money was intended for and he indicated that it was for the unlawful release of the confiscated maize seed and his friends.
Cst Gomba subsequently arrested Mandula on charges of bribery.
