Norton residents are up in arms against council authorities over a teardrop banner with words many described as “offensive, gross and scandalous”.
The tear drop banner urges residents stop open defecation and reads; “Norton yaramba zvekuitira dhodhi pachena, dhodhi muchimbuzi tapota (Norton says no to open defecation, please use toilets)”.
Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com, Norton Residents Development Trust vice chairperson, Ignatius Marirewa, said the vernacular language used banner was not appropriate adding children should never be exposed to such words. “As residents we feel so embarrassed,” he said.
“We have local languages that are rich in words to teach residents about healthy life lifestyles and the dangers of defecating in the open.
“Council authorities should have consulted residents during public meetings on what words to use.”
Mureriwa added that he would speak to council authorities and urge them to pull the banner down until appropriate and educative words are found.
Another resident, Mercy Matanga, said she found it difficult to read the banner to her child when they asked what was written on it.
“This is so gross, I had to lie to my child who is going to pre-school and used what I think is suitable language,” she said.
“But after school she was telling me the exact words on the teardrop after she leant them from her seniors at school. “
Regis Ndlovu, another local, said the banner was scandalous, adding he was shocked authorities chose to use such “disgusting words”.
Norton council officials requested questions via email when approached by NewZimbabwe.com.
They promised to respond by end of day Thursday but failed to do so.
