Jamaican star, Chris Martin staged an energetic 135 minute long set that left Zimbabweans saturated with some sweet reggae melodies, at his debut show in the country on Friday, April 29.

The venue was the chilly Glamis Arena and Chris who is now called Tatenda Martin (after the singer said he really liked the Shona name), brought back memories of the epic debut show of his fellow countryman, Busy Signal at the same venue last year.

You have to hand it to ‘Paper Loving’ hit maker for his solid musicality. The band was just so precise and the performance immaculate to say the least.

The music was well-blended with the chords played by the guitarists and keyboard player syncing up beautifully with the the drummer’s groove and merging well with Martin’s hyper actions and vocals.

On vocals, Martin demonstrated the power of understanding one’s range. One might argue that it is to be expected from a pro, but trust me, we have seen some professionals who have struggled with their range.

Unlike other international acts who leave the crowd crying for more, Chris made sure that he took the entire crowd with him straight into the depth of ecstasy and left them with an overdose of quality joy.

Many foreign and even local artists struggle to perform after the Ninja President, Winky D, but Chris who came after the Gafa, took the bar set by Winky to an even higher level.

His performance, in which he was oozing nothing but class, is yet another learning curve for our local dancehall and reggae stars. There are a couple of elements especially on the technical side of music that one can draw from Martin’s set.

Also performing was D Major from Jamaica and he too showed off his amazing voice much to the amusement of female fans in the crowd.

Though he was only up for 30 minutes, the difference from the locals was notable and again another learning curve for them. All in all it was great night out filled with nothing but quality music.

The show was closed off by Jah Prayzah who came out all guns blazing just after 4 am on Saturday morning dropping hit after hit as the fans danced and sang along.
