FORMER Mr Ugly pageant winner William Masvinu (pictured) on Friday night emerged winner during the first round of this year’s edition of the popular pageant at a contest held at Club RTS in Epworth.
The two-time champion, still smarting from a heavy defeat that saw him losing the title to Maison Sere of Mabvuku last year, shrugged off competition from five other contestants to win a place in the Mr Ugly Harare competitions to be held next month.
Tonderai Sungano and Richard Mazingwe came second and third respectively.
Masvinu will join six other contestants from other places in Harare for the provincial finals, and if he wins he will then join 10 other contestants drawn from other provinces, including Sere, for the national finals to be held in August.
Other preliminary rounds will be held at Jongwe Corner in Hatfield, Southlea Park, Chitungwiza and Kuwadzana this month. Pageant organiser, David ‘Apama’ Machowa confirmed Masvinu’s victory.
“I confirm that Masvinu won in Epworth. Only Six out of the fifteen contestants who had registered participated. There was no prize money, but a ticket to the provincial finals for the sole winner,” he said.
“We are now moving to other areas of Harare. Harare is big and we had to hold the pageant in different places. It is not yet a win for Masvinu because the final provincial competitions will be tough,” Machowa said.
Mr Ugly has become a popular event on the entertainment calendar and the event has attracted the international media. This year’s edition is being sponsored by Lifestyle Furniture Centre.
