Togolese international footballer Emmanuel Adebayor has thrown his support for Zimbabwe and Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Dr Engineer Walter Mzembi’s candidature for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation Secretary General post.
The football icon paid a courtesy call on Minister Mzembi at Radisson Blu, Lome, Togo on Wednesday.
Minister Mzembi is in Togo attending Africa Hotel Investment Forum.
“I’m here as a special guest of the president and delivering a special message from His Excellency President Robert Mugabe,” Minister Mzembi told H-Metro from Lome, Togo.
H-Metro is reliably informed that Adebayor endorsed the candidacy of the country through Minister Mzembi and he committed himself to work with the Minister in championing sport tourism in Africa.
In his endorsement, Adebayor is reported to have said Minister Mzembi “has a very high pedigree of leadership skills and global tourism stands a chance to benefit from his wealth of experience.”
And in the meeting with Minister Mzembi, Adebayor, “assured the Minister that he will visit Zimbabwe to show his solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe and the SADC-endorsed candidate.”
Minister Mzembi; who is now also hoping to get the backing of the whole African continent, is looking forward to the AU Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, in July.
Speaking of Minister Mzembi’s candidacy, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority Chief Executive Karikoga Kaseke said “his candidacy has been well received.”
“Chances are looking very bright, his chances of clinching that position are looking very bright and we wish to be celebrating in May next year, although the post will fall vacant at the end of the year,” said Kaseke.
