Gonyeti hires former Jah Prayzah Band Manager Filda Muchabaiwa

FORMER Jah Prayzah’s key dancer-cum-backing vocalist, Pamela “Gonyeti” Zulu, has roped in the lanky musician’s former manager, Filda Muchabaiwa, to handle her affairs, as she begins her journey as a solo musician, NewsDay has learnt.

Muchabaiwa, popularly known as Mama Fillo in music circles, parted ways with the Kumbumura Mhute hit-maker last year following a nine-year “romance”.

Gonyeti, who left the Third Generation Band recently citing unfavourable working conditions and poor remuneration staged her first show under Muchabaiwa’s management at Club Tabula in Southlea Park in the capital on Saturday.

On Monday, she staged another act as part of the star-studied line-up of performers at the popular Jam Session at City Sports Bar.

Muchabaiwa yesterday confirmed that she was now working with Gonyeti after the latter approached her seeking her services.

After her fallout with Jah Prayzah, Muchabaiwa had a brief stint with rising contemporary musician Andy Muridzo, before establishing an organisation meant to promote the rights of the girl-child.

She returned to showbiz as jazz musician Jean Master’s manager, but the deal broke down.

“At first, I was wary of working with Gonyeti because I didn’t want to be viewed as the mastermind of her move, but after thoughtful consultations I decided to come on board.

I didn’t know that Gonyeti was that talented, as I used to regard her only as a dancer and backing vocalist, but after seeing her other side, I was convinced she has what it takes to compete on her own,” Muchabaiwa said.

“I believe with what I have seen in Gonyeti, she is a serious contender in the music industry. We have a lot of talented female musicians in the country and Gonyeti is our own version of Brenda Fassie.”

Muchabaiwa said they would be staging a series of live shows across the country, as Gonyeti seeks to take her music to the people before she launches her debut album in October.
