SELF-PROCLAIMED Dancehall President, Wallace Chirimuko – affectionately known as Winky D in music circles – believes his dynamic sound and lyrical prowess is now ripe for an international platform.
Speaking through his manager, Jonathan Banda, in a recent interview, the Disappear hitmaker said his music now matched or even surpassed the lyrical creativity of renowned international artistes.
Banda told NewsDay that they were now planning to take their brand to a higher level and go international.
“Winky D is now geared to take his music brand to the international scene. The year 2015 was very successful and it saw him rocking airwaves and we feel that it is high time we took his music to the international level,” he said.
“In tracks like I Cry and Independent Lady, Winky D drifted from hardcore dancehall, showing his versatility. The song Disappear has a powerful chorus. It’s catchy and can quickly draw anymusic lover’s attention.”
Banda, who is the reigning Zim Dancehall Manager of the Year, said the energetic chanter was now in a different league and the next step was to knock on international doors.
“We aim to tour Europe and take his music all over the world,” he said.
The dancehall sensation is currently riding high with his recent compilation album titled Gafa Life: Kickstape that features the song of the moment, Disappear, which has also become a hit in Pentecostal churches that peddled the gospel that 2016 would be problem-free for their members.
Since its release, the track has recorded 176 444 hits on You Tube and has commanded several likes on the British Broadcasting Corporation music website.
Over the years, Winky D has proved to be a genius and consistent entertainer, bagging several awards and recognition in his meteoric rise to stardom.
At the second edition of the 2015 Zim-Dancehall Awards, he stole the show after walking away with three gongs and outclassing several other artistes in the genre, which is very popular with ghetto youths.
On New Year’s Eve, at a gig dubbed the Fill-up HICC in Harare, Winky D outclassed Jah Prayzah, who had throughout 2015 been the major attraction following his chart-buster album Jerusarema.
His video, Chiramu, was also outstanding and stood on position two in the 2015 Coca-Cola Top 10 Videos of the Year. Newsday
