Minister Walter Mzembi
Zimbabwe has nominated the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Cde Walter Mzembi as the country’s candidate for the position of Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation  (UNWTO) that falls vacant in 2017.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Dr Christopher Mushohwe in Harare today.

"Zimbabwe as a country committed to the growth of global tourism is confident and proud of offering the best candidate to the world. Cde Mzembi's candidature has been endorsed by the SADC  Council of Ministers," said Dr Mushohwe.

"Zimbabwe believes tourism is a sustainable sector that can add impetus to uplifting the standards of living of the people globally," added Dr Mushohwe.

In 2015 alone, the UNWTO tourism barometer indicates that tourism contributed about nine percent in terms of global gross domestic product (GDP) and employed over US$266 million people worldwide, generating US$1,5 trillion.

Zimbabwe joined the UNTWO in 1982 and is part of the organisation's membership of 157 countries, six associate members and over 480 affiliate members representing private sector.
