Limited in ambition, limited in execution, England lost in Alicante, but football won. Sorry, but there is more to the game than this.
There is hope and beauty and technique, and Spain took all the plaudits that mattered at the Estadio Jose Rico Perez, including the one that matters most: the victory.
That the goal which as good as decided the game was one of the most exquisite of the season only underlined the difference in these teams.
