BUHERA South legislator Joseph Chinotimba says he wished President Robert Mugabe would “lose his senses” and appoint him a minister, adding Zimbabweans would be amazed at how easily he would mend the broken country.
Chinotimba is one of the few war veterans admired by Mugabe. The veteran leader praised the ruling party legislator during Zanu PF’s conference in Victoria Falls last December.
Speaking during a StarFM current radio programme Wednesday, Chinotimba told listeners that his wish was to take over the most “corrupt ministry” in government.
Admitting his lack of formal education, the MP said his guerrilla training made him what he is today and prepared him for leadership roles, pointing his “well thought out contributions” in parliamentary debates.
“When I was elected into Parliament, lots of people said Chinotimba is not educated, but what they forgot was that I am a well-trained former liberation fighter who was trained in a foreign country – Romania,” he said.
“I was an outstanding guerrilla fighter which most people are not aware of and that experience made me what I am today. That’s why you see me making meaningful contribution to debates in Parliament better than those who have degrees.”
Chinotimba added that those educated to degree level were “thieves with a ball point” as they use their knowledge to amass personal wealth at the expense of the people.
“I just wish President Robert Mugabe would make a surprise decision and appoint me a Minister.
“This one will be the most vibrant ministry in the country compared to all those being led by ministers with degrees and speak fluent English.”
Those who doubt his competence should go and ask the Harare City Council management how he changed the municipal police when he was appointed Chief Inspector, said the MP.
“Going to school does not make you a hard worker; No! No! No!”
Chinotimba said he can drive any ministry “to great heights” but would prefer “the one where people are saying there is lots of corruption”.
“I don’t know which Ministry that is, but ordinary Zimbabweans know which portfolio is corrupt and under- performing.
“I can give you an example of demolishing people’s houses; I am not saying I want to run that Ministry (Ministry of Local Government).
“But it’s sad; since 2000, 2005, 2008, and 2015/6 the government has been destroying people houses, but the ministers are there; the commanders are there. Why? What are we doing?
“Why are we not feeling kakurwadziwa nevanu vedu (we can’t we empathise with our people’s pain and suffering)?”
He added that the Zanu PF government was ordering the destruction of houses that belong to the same people who voted them into power “overwhelmingly”.
“This is very bad,” fumed Chinotimba.
Chinotimba said claims the properties were built on undesignated land was not an excuse to destroy people’s homes “because some politicians were there whilst they were constructing these house”.
“We do not need to wait for them to build and say, after building, let’s destroy their houses.”
He added that, as a legislator, this is beyond his ‘repair’.
During the Zanu PF national people’s conference last December, Mugabe praised Chinotimba for being “a humble servant of the people”.
“One of the war veterans who is a good example is Chinotimba. He is down-to-earth and he is practical.
“He went to war and missed his education, but he is now a Member of Parliament,” Mugabe told Zanu PF supporters.
