Mourinho was hired as Van Gaal’s successor in May, despite the latter winning the first trophy of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era in the form of the FA Cup.
The former Chelsea boss was inundated with offers after being axed by the Blues back in December, but has revealed the competitive nature of the Premier League makes it his ideal environment to manage in.
“I had the opportunity to go to Italy or Spain as I had in the past but the Premier League is special,” the Portuguese boss told Italian publication Gazetta dello Sport.
“In some countries, the big clubs always want to be the best and leave the others behind, getting smaller. “In England, the opposite occurs. Here, they want all of the clubs in the league to be competitive.”
The United job is Mourinho’s seventh – and arguably most challenging – of his career. Both David Moyes and Van Gaal were brought in aiming to continue the glittering success that Ferguson achieved during his 26-year spell at the club.
However, both were ruthlessly sacked after failing to meet the demands of the club’s board and supporters.
Mourinho has set himself high expectations for his time at Old Trafford, though admitted that he can sometimes expect too much from his players.
“Sometimes, I’m a little stupid in setting goals, the dumbest thing of all is perhaps wanting to win every game and every competition because it is impossible,” he added.
“What we are going to do is start by playing to win each time we are on the field and in the end, we will see where that takes us.’
Mourinho has made an instant impression at Old Trafford – having won his first three games in a row – and will be aiming to continue his unbeaten streak when United travel to Hull City on Saturday (5.30pm).
