Chinese arrested for trying to smuggle $32,000 from Zimbabwe illegaly

A 55 YEAR OLD Chinese man residing in Vainona, Harare, Wednesday appeared in court accused of trying to export $32, 000, a sum which is well above the permitted $5 000.

Li Yuchang had $27, 000 of his money forfeited by the state before he was brought to court.

He was remanded in custody pending his sentence Thursday.

The court heard Yuchang was arrested after the police received a tip that he intended to smuggle cash exceeding the stipulated $5 000. On March 8 and at Harare International airport, detectives from minerals and border control unit placed him on surveillance.

 Yuchang went through ZIMRA desk where he declared some belts and handbags made from crocodile, elephant and hippopotamus skin.

Court heard he did not declare any cash.

When he passed the immigration check point the police, in company of Civil Aviation Authority officials, then confronted him. They then searched him and found $10, 000 hidden under his belt while $20 000 was in his luggage bag and $2000 in his wallet.

He was subsequently arrested.

Magistrate, Elijah Makomo, presided over the case while Francesca Mukumbiri appeared for the state.
