Chinese man eats 2.5Kg of hot chillies everyday

A man from a small village has become an unlikely celebrity in China for his incredible appetite for red hot chillies.

Li Yongzhi, who lives in the village of Shawoli in Henan province, enjoys the heat so much he consumes up to 5.5 lbs (2.5 kilograms) of chilli peppers every day.

Mr Li, 48, even uses chillies as mouthwash in the morning, according to People's Daily Online.  According to local reports, Li Yongzhi has taken a liking to spicy food since his childhood.

The villager, who is dubbed 'king of chilli' in China, told Zhenzhou Evening News that he could have a meal with no meat or eggs, but never without a handful of chillies.

He said: 'Most people brush their teeth in the morning, I just eat chillies to freshen up my breath.

'Without chillies, any meal is tasteless.' He added that chillies also helps him kill time as he eats them as a snack in the evening after he finishes a day of work.

In order to satisfy his daily needs, Mr Li grows eight different types of chilli peppers in his garden.
