In a move that is bound to bring joy to sungura music lovers, reknowned musicians Alick Macheso, Nicholas Zakaria and his brother Zakaria have all but confirmed a return to the good old times through the recording of a joint album.
The trio who made shock-waves as the all conquering Khiama boys confirmed in a recent interview that they will soon be recording a joint album reminiscent of the past times when they worked together.
Regardess of the fact that Macheso and Zakaria Zakaria quit the Nicholas Zakaria-led Khiama Boys in 1997 to form Orchestra Mberikwazvo, the three sungura musicians insist that they continue enjoying warm relations.
“We have discussed it and we have agreed that we should work on a joint album which is good for our fans.
“It is only that at times we become very busy but we have already talked about it. I think it is a good idea for us and it will send a positive signal to the society, ndizvo zvinofanirwa kuitwa pahukama,” said Macheso.
Nicholas Zakaria, who mentored Macheso but has largely played second fiddle to his gifted protégé ever since they parted ways, is confident that the album will finally happen this year.
“I am still working on my latest album which will be released in July and after that we can be in a better position to work on the joint album,” he said.
The Khiama Boys leader is currently working on his 27th studio album which he hopes will carry a few political songs.
Zakaria Zakaria, who now fronts Chilli Boys, told the Daily News that he was in good books with his brother and Macheso. He said his failure to attend the launch of Macheso’s 10th album on March 24 at Harare International Conference Centre was down to a hectic schedule.
“It is only that I have been very busy lately but we are all keen to do the joint album. I wanted to grace Macheso’s album launch but I failed because I had other commitments on that day.
“I sent my apologies to him and he was fully aware about what I was doing on that particular night,” said Zakaria who is widely regarded as the best sungura rhythm guitarist along with Innocent Mjintu.
Meanwhile, Macheso says his latest and 10th studio project Tsoka Dzerwendo (Ayayaa) has the potential to surpass his previous ones in terms of sales and popularity.
“According to records Simbaradzo performed better than all the other albums in terms of sales but this time I think Tsoka Dzerwendo (Ayayaa) has the potential to break the record.
“I hope by the end of the year the album will turn out to be the best album ever from Orchestra Mberikwazvo.
“The strategy we used to sell the album was amazing. I have to thank my friends from Nash Paints, Red Cross and Jive Zimbabwe for making it happen,” he said.
Tsoka Dzerwendo (Ayayaa) reportedly sold 250 000 copies during its first week of release while about 350 000 copies of Simbaradzo were sold.
